Artist’s Statement:
‘The Big Dry’ is my artistic response to Perth’s record-breaking dry spell. Over the past six months, Perth experienced its driest period, while Western Australia faced its hottest summer. In February 2024, vast areas of vegetation began to brown and die off, highlighting the disparity in rainfall across Australia. This trend aligns with climate change models identifying southwestern Australia as a hotspot for warming and drying. Using encaustic wax and oil, I have captured the rustic, arid landscape and the parched trees, reflecting the severe environmental changes and the region’s vulnerability to climate change.
