Artist’s Statement:
My work frequently references the historical centrality of the neoclassical male nude as symbolic of European imperialism. This work forms part of an ongoing series of depictions of the remaining swamplands around Perth ? residual traces of a once-vast system of wetlands that has been progressively drained over the past two centuries to create the Perth metropolitan area. In this case, the ancient beauty of Lake Claremont contrasts with the neoclassical physique of a naked white male, evoking notions of dominance and fragility in the landscape.
