The Royal Agricultural Society of WA last night proudly honoured the late Jim Cardile, of Cardile Fireworks, as the inaugural Legend of the Show, the highest accolade recognising extraordinary individuals who have shaped the Perth Royal Show and its enduring 189-year history.
The announcement was made in front of a packed main arena audience ahead of the Show’s mesmerising opening night fireworks, a fitting tribute to the man whose family has lit up the skies of Perth for more than 70 years.
Jim Cardile, who passed away in May this year at the age of 85, and the Cardile family, are Western Australia’s longest-running fireworks specialists. From his very first display at the Claremont Showground as a teenager in the 1950s, Jim and his family went on to create one of the Show’s most iconic traditions, presenting nightly fireworks that have become synonymous with the Perth Royal Show experience.
Following the celebration of 70 years of Cardile fireworks at the Perth Royal Show in 2024, this year’s displays carry forward that legacy with the most spectacular fireworks ever staged at the Show, launched from more than 100 locations across the main arena.
The Royal Agricultural Society of WA’s CEO Robyn Sermon said, “The Legend of the Show award honours those whose dedication and spirit have become woven into the very fabric of the Perth Royal Show. It is especially meaningful that the first award recognises Jim Cardile, whose passion, pyrotechnic talent and innovative approach to his craft, has created memories for generations of Western Australians. His legacy is one of joy, community and connection, everything the Show represents.”
Rob Cardile, son of Jim, said, “For Dad, the Perth Royal Show was like family. He gave everything to ensure each display was something special. To see him recognised in this way means so much to our family, and we are proud to continue his work and the legacy he created.”
Jimmy Cardile, son of Rob and grandson of Jim, added, “This award isn’t just about fireworks, it represents a man’s life-long dedication to bringing joy to others. We’re honoured to celebrate him with the biggest show yet, every night of this year’s Perth Royal Show. We strive to make him proud by carrying on his passion and sharing it with the next generation.”
The Legend of the Show award will become an annual tradition, with future recipients celebrated along a permanent “walk of fame” recognising the individuals who have made an indelible mark on the history of the Show.
In honour of Jim, this year the Cardile family will captivate Perth Royal Show audiences by transforming the Showground into a breathtaking 360-degree immersive sky theatre. Each evening will culminate in the largest finale ever staged, ensuring Jim’s legacy continues to light up Western Australia for generations to come.
