The Woodchopping Competition is one of the biggest drawcards of the Perth Royal Show, bringing together elite competitors from across Australia and New Zealand.
With a proud history dating back to 1929, this thrilling event showcases incredible strength, speed, and precision as competitors race the clock and each other to slice through massive logs.
What You’ll See:
Across the week-long program, you’ll witness a full lineup of events including the World Underhand Championship, Australian Standing Block Championships, WA v SA Invitation Relays, and the always popular Axe Throwing Competitions.
There are also junior, novice, women’s, and veterans’ classes, making it a true all-ages showcase of skill.
Crowds gather daily around the Woodchopping Arena to cheer on their favourites, feel the energy of axes striking timber, and celebrate one of the oldest and most exciting traditions of agricultural shows.

Woodchopping Arena, Claremont Showground
The Woodchopping Competition is conducted under the rules of the Australian Axemen’s Association and welcomes competitors from across Australia and beyond.
Events include underhand, standing block, tree felling, sawing, axe throwing, relays, and championship titles.
Key Dates:
- Entries open: 4.30pm, Friday 7 March 2025
- Entries close: Midnight, Sunday 27 April 2025
Entry Fees and Prizes:
Entry fees vary by class, from $15–$60.
With over $80,000 in prize money, including one International Title and two Australian Titles.
Major championship events offer significant prize pools, including:
- World 325mm Underhand Championship – First prize $4,000
- Australian Standing Block Championships – First prize $2,500
- WA Championships and RASWA titles – Cash prizes and sashes across a wide range of divisions.
