The Alpaca Competition keeps on growing which follows an industry experiencing rapid growth. Quality female alpacas fetch around $5000 but add a winning purple sash from the Perth Royal Show and that figure increases substantially. The competition’s supreme champion can sell for anywhere between $20,000 and $30,000; even more if shown successfully at the national show and sale.
Australia has the largest alpaca herd outside South America. Australia produced just 70 tonnes of fleece last year but that’s expected to double every two years as the market grows. Domestic demand for alpaca fleece currently exceeds supply.
If you’ve never met an alpaca before come and say hello in the Creatures Great and Small Pavilion!
