Perth Royal Art Prize Returns for 2022

Perth Royal Art Prize Returns For 2022

April 11, 2022

The Royal Agricultural Society of WA is thrilled to announce the return of the Perth Royal Art Prize after a two year hiatus. Entries are now welcome for this sought after Prize which will include a number of new awards this year and an increased prize pool of $26,500.

As one of the most prestigious art competitions in Western Australia, it is the leading prize for art based on landscape in Western Australia. First prize is both a generous $20,000 cash and non-acquisitive; providing the winning artist with the opportunity to sell their work at the prize exhibition.

Initially awarded in 1974, the Perth Royal Art Prize is distinguished by a number of firsts this year. A new Aboriginal Art Award and Emerging Artist Award are being introduced, to accompany the main prize, as well as two Highly Commended Awards.

For the first time the Prize will be shown outside of the 8 days of the annual Perth Royal Show, with free daily access to the exhibition and free parking at the Wilkinson Pavilion Gallery from 2 to 10 September.

Aside from the opportunity to show an artist’s work to the general public, the exhibition presents an excellent space for the selected finalists to network; establish new contacts and find new markets for their work. For an artist to be selected to exhibit is a ‘win’ in itself and this exposure can deliver many benefits, including the broad reach of an online sales platform.

For the Perth Royal Art Prize’s Curator, Sandra Murray, the return of the competition is of vital importance to the WA visual arts sector whilst it still suffers from the ongoing impact of Covid.

“As the only prize in the State dedicated to landscape and solely for WA based artists, the Prize supports our artists with an exceptional opportunity to exhibit their work on a significant stage. We offer a platform for artists to see their work in a curated, professionally presented exhibition”, said Ms Murray.

“The Prize encourages the interpretation of the landscape as a significant contemporary genre and finalists will be chosen by a selection panel in July. I encourage artists from all stages of their career from emerging to established to enter”, concluded Ms Murray.

Entries for the 2022 Perth Royal Art Prize for Landscape opened on Thursday 7 April 2022 and close Sunday 3 July 2022.

The Perth Royal Art Prize Exhibition will be held in the Wilkinson Pavillion Gallery from Thursday 1st September (Opening night) until Saturday 10 September.
