What's On?

The West Australian Open Art Exhibition

Kim Robinson of Dunsborough has won first prize and $5000 in the 2007 Perth Royal Show West Australian Open Art competition.

Her painting  'Flower of Butterfly Tree' also won the best rural artist award which attracted prize money of $1500.

Judges described her painting as a macro view of the centre of a flower which was executed with great subtlety.

According to competition organiser Gillian Peebles,  judges said that the painting had a translucent surface and gently modulated, complimentary colours.

“The juges agreed Flower of Butterfly Tree was a  perfectly balanced composition which deserved a lingering view,” she said.

This year the competition attracted 256 entries with 175 on exhibit. Featuring alongside the competition entries are 37 paintings from well known artists who were invited to participate in the Guy Grey-Smith Memorial Exhibition. Artists were sent a 10 x 12 inch unframed canvas to execute a piece of art in their own style and choice of media. Those participating include Robert Juniper, Franz Kempf and Brendon Darby. Guy Grey Smith was chosen for the memorial exhibition because he is recognised as being one of Australia's leading artists and introducing modern form to WA art. He was born in Boyup Brook and developed his skills as an artist after spending time in London during WWII.

A people’s choice award will be voted on by those visiting the exhibition at the 2007 Perth Royal Show which is on from Saturday, 29th September until Saturday 6th October.

The West Australian Open Art Exhibition is located in the Arthur Wilkinson Pavilion. Opening times are from 9am to 8pm.
