Rural Community Achiever
2011 Rural Community Achiever Arthur Pederick and The RAS of WA President Hugh Harding
Wagin man Arthur Pederick has been named the 2011 Rural Community Achiever.
Nominated by The Wagin Agricultural Society (The WAS), Arthur has participated in farming, stud breeding, emu farming and international consultancy for over 50 years.
He has won all the major Corriedale sheep trophies available Australia-wide.
The now retired farmer has also worked tirelessly to empower the people of the community, particularly young people, to achieve their full potential.
Married with three grown children and eight grandchildren, Arthur is a six times winner of the Perth Royal Show’s Governor’s Cup, a pioneer emu farmer who consulted in China, a successful exhibitor of Corriedale sheep at Perth Royal Shows and Wagin Woolorama and, for 50 years, a lay preacher with the Methodist/Uniting Church.
Last year’s rural community achiever, Malcom Edward, also from Wagin, says the Wagin Woolorama has benefitted from Arthur introducing structures in the British and Australasian sheep competition, the trade fair and the rodeo.
“His active presence has built strength into us all,” he says.
Aside from his industry achievements, the 67-year-old has mentored troubled youth and won gratitude for his work with the local school volunteer program and drug awareness.
As a man of faith he has been a Sunday School teacher for 40 years and been involved in Scripture Union, Beach Missions and Frontier Youth Services.
Arthur will donate his prize money to further equip the Youth Centre Shed to facilitate projects and activities for intergenerational community development.
