Murdoch University
In 2011 the Murdoch ICMJ team returned triumphant from July’s Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest in Armidale NSW, being named Champion Australian Team edging out nine other Aussie Universities. However Murdoch did not retain the Roy MacDonald Shield for overall winners which was won by Texas Tech University. The Murdoch Meat Judging team won the prestigious Roy McDonald Shield for the national meat judging competition in 2010.
This year Murdoch took over seven animal science students, one veterinary student and one sheep CRC PhD student. The five days program was again very hectic and filled with great speakers from across the industry, whom all challenged the students immensely about the future of their industry. Among the invited speakers at the event were the Southern R&D manager of MLA, Dr Alex Ball, COO of AACo, Troy Setter, CEO of JBS Australia, Iain Mars, Research Manager of Australian Pork Limited, Dr Darryl Dsouzas and livestock manager of Cargill Australia, Grant Geary plus many more.
Our champion team (pictured below) was made up of Claire Payne, Engela Gildenhuys, Amy Suckling and Jade Moody. These four ladies took out the champion team for Primal and Retail Cut Identification and runners-up in Eating Quality Evaluation, Pork Judging and overall Questions and Reasons.
Clair Payne, Amy Suckling and Engela Gildenhuys also had individual success and were shortlisted with another seven students from other universities for selection in the Australian national team. The shortlisted group of ten will spend one week in Brisbane later this year for more MSA intensive training in the hope of gaining selection on the Australian team which will travel to the USA and compete in Denver, Colorado, in January 2012.
