The Royal Agricultural Society of WA, established in 1831, is a not for profit and independent organisation. Each year we coordinate competitions that are recognised nationally as a benchmark of innovation and excellence. We offer educational scholarships for secondary and tertiary students studying agriculture, provide facilities at Claremont Showground for community and industry use, and we encourage all Western Australians to learn more about agriculture at the Perth Royal Show.

The Perth Royal Show is WA’s most important and the longest standing community event. RASWA first coordinated the Royal Show as the Annual Fair and Cattle Show at Guildford in 1834 before moving to Claremont Showground in 1904. The Perth Royal Show has been staged continuously since 1834 except the years during World War I and II when the Showground was used as an accommodation and training base for military personnel, including the 10th Light Horse and 16th and 17th Battalions.

RASWA is passionate about educating people of all ages about agriculture and the Perth Royal Show interactive learning exhibits tell the story of agriculture to hundreds of thousands of West Australians. We believe it is important that WA families understand the significance of agriculture to our economy and appreciate the innovation, efficiency and technology that supports it.

Starting life as the Annual Fair and Cattle Show in Guildford in 1834, the Perth Royal Show is WA’s most important and long-standing community event. At a historic RASWA meeting in January 1834 a decision was made to hold an annual show. According to records at the time, the colony’s stock amounted to 307 cows, 96 working cattle, 97 bulls and steers, 3545 sheep, 492 goats and 374 pigs.

In 1902 in return for the land in Guildford, the State Government granted RASWA a site of 34 acres in Claremont. After some groundworks and levelling at the site, the first show was held at Claremont in 1905, utilising buildings transported from the old Guildford grounds along with a newly constructed Exhibition Hall and bar. The land granted to RASWA was later increased to 21 Ha and then 30Ha.

The first show in Claremont saw 30,000 people attend, more than quadruple the previous attendance, with a prize money pool of over 3,000 pounds. The new location allowed more and more Western Australians to experience the show, with the number of visitors growing ever since – peaking at over 460,000 people in 1997.

The Perth Royal Show has been staged continuously for over 185 years, with only a few exceptions during disruptive global events. During World War I and II the show was cancelled, as the Showground was used as an accommodation and training base for military personnel including the 10^th Light Horse and 16^th and 17^th Battalions. In 2020 the show was cancelled, for the first time outside of wartime, due to the COVID pandemic. Thankfully, the Perth Royal Show returned in 2021 and 2022. Both shows were successful, with over 350,000 people in attendance each year.
