Each year around 1000 sheep come to the Show to be judged on their meat, wool or breeding. While they’re here, they live in the Jim Horwood Pavilion.

A wide variety of breeds are represented from the Merino and the Poll Dorset to British breeds like the Texel, Border Leicesters and Corridale. This year’s feature breed is the Suffolk.

For the first three days of the Show, the fine wool Merinos are on display and from Wednesday to Saturday the different meat breeds put their best hoof forward to be judged by experts from around the country.

The week culminates in the live sheep auction on Friday at 1pm. It’s a noisy and colourful affair which draws plenty of spectators and buyers. Farmers have brought their best sheep to the Show in the hope of realising a strong price their animals and a sheep with a Royal Show ribbon will often go for a higher price.

On Thursday at 4pm the Interbreed competition takes place. Three sheep from each breed line up in the hope of being named the best breed of the Show.

Don’t forget the shearing demonstrations all week and keep an eye out for the Rainbow Sheep which kids love.
