Angora Goat & Mohair Fleeces

Angora goats produce mohair fleece, which is a silky textile often spun into a thread and can then be woven, knitted or crocheted. It’s a light, durable and warm fibre which also has wicking properties, meaning it can carry moisture away from the skin of the wearer. An angora goat can produce between five and eight kgs of mohair annually.

The English word mohair comes from the Arabic word mukhayyar, referring to a type of woven head cloth. Angora goats originate from Ankara, Turkey.

At the 2010 Smoke Free Perth Royal Show, angora goats and mohair fleeces are in the Jim Horwood Pavilion. Goats and fleeces are judged on the first Saturday of the Show and fleeces will be on display all week.

See creative creations using mohair in the Creative Crafts Competition in the Silver Jubilee Pavilion.
