Alpaca

The alpaca competition has experienced a 25% growth in entries in 2008, which points to an industry experiencing rapid growth. Quality female alpacas fetch around $5,000 but add a winning purple sash and that figure increases substantially. The competition’s supreme champion can sell for anywhere between $20,000 and $30,000; even more if shown successfully at the national show and sale.

Australia has the largest alpaca herd outside South America. Australia produced just 70 tonnes of fleece last year but that’s expected to double every two years as the market grows. Domestic demand for alpaca fleece currently exceeds supply.

If you've never met an alpaca before, say hello in the Tom Wilding Pavilion.
