New Initiative- Western Australian Wine Ambassador Last year, The Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia, in conjunction with the Wine Industry Association of WA and the WA Government initiated a program to encourage the recognition, promotion and education internationally of the excellent range and quality of WA’s wines. In 2011, Ch’ng Poh Tiong from Singapore was appointed the first Western Australian Wine Ambassador. A lawyer by training, Ch’ng Poh Tiong has, since 1998, written the oldest, continuous wine column in Chinese in the world in Singapore’s largest circulation Chinese newspaper, the Lianhe Zaobao. Since 1991 he has published The Wine Review, the oldest wine publication in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and China, and since 2000, the world’s first Chinese Bordeaux Guide. He is founder of ICCCW - International Congress of Chinese Cuisine & Wine, and publisher of Chinese Cuisine & Wine. A columnist for the United Kingdom’s Decanter magazine, Ch’ng is also Regional Chair, Middle East, Far East & Asia, Decanter World Wine Awards. CH’NG also writes a column in China’s Wine Life magazine and a blog in Sina.com, one of China’s biggest internet portals. He is also author of the bi-lingual Chinese/English book 108 Great Chinese Dishes Paired. Ch’ng is a wine trainer to France Accor Group’s Sofitel Luxury Hotels in China, and wine consultant to Singapore’s Fair Price and Finest supermarkets. Ch’ng Poh Tiong will be hosting a range of specialty events in Beijing and Shanghai. These events, coordinated by the Wine Industry Association will be promoting the WA wine regions through various media and wholesale avenues.
Results of 2011 Show
The Most Successful WA Exhibitor was Houghton Wines and the Most Successful WA Exhibitor processing under 300 tonnes was Willow Bridge Estate who also won the Best Dry Red Table Wine (Blends) Trophy.
Castelli Wines laid claim to three trophies when taking out the Best West Australian Wine for their Castelli Riesling 2011 Vintage, the Best Western Australian White Table Wine and Best 2011 Vintage Dry White Table Wine.
The two most prestigious trophies at this year’s five-day event were carried off by Eastern State’s companies, Hardys Wines for Most Successful Exhibitor and Chateau Reynella for the Best Wine of the Show with its Chateau Reynella Shiraz 2009 Vintage.
